Loaders moving frac sand at mining terminal in Western Canada

Peaskie Minerals is expanding its operations in Western Canada to address the growing demand for frac sand, a key component in hydraulic fracturing. The company is increasing capacity at its Beaverlodge terminal by 300,000 tons per year and investing up to C$30mn in a new terminal near Fort St. John with an annual capacity of one million tons.

The expansion comes amid a surge in drilling activity across Western Canada, which has pushed demand for frac sand to record levels. Energy producers are seeking more reliable and cost-efficient supply chains as they ramp up exploration and production programs.

“By increasing our terminal network, we can reduce transportation costs and improve delivery times to key drilling areas,” Peaskie Minerals said in a statement. The company expects the projects to alleviate supply bottlenecks and support producers in controlling operating costs.

Industry analysts described the expansion as a timely response to mounting pressures in the sector. Localized storage and distribution facilities are seen as crucial to improving logistics and reducing dependence on long-haul transportation, which has been vulnerable to price fluctuations and delays.

The investment reflects broader efforts to modernize Canada’s energy infrastructure. While regulatory approvals and construction expenses present challenges, Peaskie’s plans have been welcomed by industry participants as a positive signal for future growth.

Peaskie Minerals, which supplies frac sand to oil and gas operators across the region, anticipates the added capacity will position it to benefit from long-term increases in drilling activity. The company’s move underscores growing momentum in strengthening supply chains as producers seek to improve efficiency during a period of elevated global energy demand.
